The court case starts off with Mr. Heck Tate saying he was called by Mr. Bob Ewell on the night of November 21 because some nigger had raped his daughter. He said he had found her lying in the middle of the floor and she was pretty well beaten up. When he asked her who had did it she said Tom Robinson. Atticus then begins to question him. He asks if they called a doctor. Mr. Heck Tate tells him no, so Atticus wonders why. Mr. Heck Tate replies with I don't exactly know why. Atticus then asks what he injures were like if he says she was pretty badly beaten up. He then wants to know what side the black eye is on. Mr. Heck Tate is unsure until he looks at Mayella tells him the right side. Bob Ewell then comes to the stand and tells them that he was on his way home from the woods when he heard Mayella screaming, he said it was just before sundown. When he got there he saw Ton Robinson raping her. Atticus then asks if he agrees with everything Mr. Heck Tate says and he tells him yes.
Mayella Ewell then comes up to the stand and says she was on the porch the night of November 21. She then burst into tears into tears and pointed to Mr. Finch. She then said, " I don't want him doing me like he done my Papa, trying to make him out left handed...". She then said she was sitting on the porch when he came along and there was an old chiffarobe in the yard, she told him it needed to be done while he was in the woods. She said she then asked him to help her cut it up. When she went to go get him a nickel she said she turned around and he jumped on her. He got her around the neck and stared cussing at her. She didn't remember anything else after she woke up to Mr. Heck Tate standing over her. They ask her questions and she tells them that he is well known to them.
Mr.Robinson then comes up and starts by saying that he had gone to jail once before for getting in a fight with some other guy. The other guy didn't have to go though because he paid to get out. He then says that he had seen Mayella many of times and always stopped by her house to help her because it seemed like her dad never helped. He said that he walked by and she asked him to chop up the chiffarobe. When was leaving he said she jumped on him and hugged his waist and kissed him. She said that she had never kissed a man before and her dad didn't count, so it might as well be a black man. He then saw Mr. Ewell coming so he ran away as fast as he could because he was afraid of having to go to court for what he didn't do. He said that he didn't rape Mayella. Atticus then ends with a speech about how Tom didn't rape Mayella and she is the one that is not innocent.
